Cold Stone Therapy for Migraine Headaches
|
This innovative treatment created by Kelly Lott is designed specifically for people who want an alternative, fast and dramatic relief treatment for all kinds of headaches, without taking drugs.
Approximately 50 million documented people in the U.S. suffer every year.
Women are most affected (3:1 vs. men) most commonly with premenstrual cycle.
- Approximately 70% of all women who get migraines can predict the onset of a headache around their cycle.
- Hormonal fluctuations (estrogen)
- With menopause, fluctuations stop, causing a 65-70% less frequency of headaches
30-45 year olds have more migraines than any other age groups. 70-80% of migraine sufferers have a family history of migraines, why is not known.

Classified as a Migraine:
- A headache only on one side of the head
- Pulsating or throbbing pain
- Can shift sides during the same headache, 1 in 10 thousand have this happen.
- Lasts 4-72 hours
- Pain must be severe enough to limit or impair normal activity
- Pain must be intensified by physical exertion
Classic and Common: Prodrome and Aura or ‘floaters’
Approximately 25% of "migraineur’s" have a classic kind of headache. The prodrome (sometimes called the pre-headache) may be experienced hours or even days before a migraine episode. With effective immediate treatment, they can abort the headache.
Symptoms typical of the prodrome are:
- Food cravings
- Constipation or diarrhea
- Mood changes-depression, irritability
- Muscle stiffness, especially the neck
- Fatigue
- Increased urination
The Aura follows the prodrome and usually lasts less than an hour. The symptoms and effects of the aura vary widely. Some can be terrifying, especially when experienced for the first time.
- Visual: flashing lights, wavy lines, spots, partial loss of sight, blurry vision
- Olfactory hallucinations-smelling odors that aren’t there
- Tingling or numbness of the face and extremities on the side where the headache develops
- Difficult finding words and/or speaking
- Confusion
- Vertigo
- Partial paralysis
- Auditory hallucinations
- Decrease in or loss of hearing
- Reduced sensation
- Hypersensitivity to feel and touch
Other symptoms of migraines can include:
- Pain feeling "heavy" on their head
- Sharp pain in one area, "like a knife in my eye"
During a migraine, the blood vessels in the brain expand in a process called vasodilatation. As the tissues surrounding the brain swell, the pain intensifies.
Most ‘headache’ medicines increase blood vessel dilation which increases inter-cranial swelling, worsening the migraine. Taking too much of some medicines can cause "rebound headaches".
A migraine is thought to be caused by an inappropriate activation of a pain warning system. This system stays on and continuously repeats.
Migraine Miracle®, The Natural Migraine Solution is a treatment that combines custom designed cold marbles stones to contour along key headache sites, which will immediately start to reduce the swelling of the blood vessels and essential oils (aromatherapy) develop specifically to counteract the top four kinds of headache pain.
The four most common types of headaches that are suffered are from food, environment, stress and hormones.
The essential oils are applied to the skin of the face and neck. When the client inhales these essential oils, it immediately begins to affect the brain physiologically, thereby calming the tissues and naturally reducing the pain.

I have been teaching this treatment to massage therapists and spa practitioners for the past three years and I am getting dramatic responses from them about their clients.
Many of my students suffer with headaches themselves either with migraines or extreme sinus congestion with swelling. Almost immediately after receiving the treatment in class, they have reported to me that they love the cold of the marble, it immediately soothes their aching head and they can feel their sinus’ draining.
One of my trained massage therapists in Burleson, Texas has told me of one of her clients who has a shunt in her head to reduce fluid retention. She often suffers with migraine pain when the shunt does not help enough with the pressure. When she feels the symptoms coming on, she calls the therapist to immediately come and receive the cold stone treatment. She reports that it reduces her pain within 30 minutes and often is completely void of pain within a couple of hours.
She also reports she has a mother/daughter that both suffer with migraines especially at high stress time of the Holidays. They report that they both usually have to go to bed for 2 days and miss out on most everything with family. They both come for the treatment as soon as the symptoms start, and they have reported that they have not had a headache bad enough to go to bed from or have the nausea that comes with the migraines.

Testimonials To Kelly Lott:
While I have only been a licensed massage therapist since November 2009, I have been a headache sufferer since I was nine years old. It was January 1996 and I was nine years old when I had a horrific bike accident that changed my life forever. Not only did I suffer from a concussion, knocked out my four permanent front teeth, spent 3 and half hours in the operating room resulting in over 300 hundred stitches and acquired minor brain damage, but from that day forth I would live with a constant headache. At times the headache was minor and more of a lingering dull pain that could be ignored. But at other times, it would be debilitating. These times the headache would escalate into a migraine that could not be relieved with any sort of medication. My doctors, neurologists, and even my mother tried everything to ease my pain when the headaches got to this point of severity. Regardless of what we tried, I woke up every day with at least a dull minor headache and had the severe migraine style headaches anywhere between 5 to 10 times a month. This went on for 15 years! Finally, I had given up trying the conventional headache treatments and after becoming a LMT myself, I signed up for the cold stone migraine headache workshop at the National Massage Conference in 2010. After learning all the specialized facial strokes and where and how to place each of the cold marble stones, I practiced performing the treatment as a whole on my massage partner. At the time, my partner could not handle the intensely cold stones on her face for too long and I began to doubt whether or not I would be able to handle them and if they would truly help or not. Then it was my turn to receive. I was nervous since I was having a fairly severe headache that day. It wasn’t one of my worst headaches but it was severe enough that the pain was hindering my ability to stay focused, grounded, and on task. As I laid down to receive, I said to myself, have an open mind and relax, reminding myself that the treatment couldn’t make me feel any worse and modern medicine hadn’t helped my headaches anyway. As my massage partner began the treatment on me, it felt amazing. The stones could have even been colder. The quickness of the pain relief actually started to make me ill and I nearly lost my lunch. But as the treatment continued my body’s response was less intense and more and more pain release. After the course was over, I shared my headache past misery with some of the class and decided that the treatment had felt so amazing that I would keep it up by using the stones and techniques on myself. Since then I have used the cold stones and facial strokes on myself about once every other or every 2 days and I have been headache free for over 2 months! I have only had to take pain killers once and it was to bring a fever down not for a headache. Even if I recently used the stones, the moment I start to feel a headache coming on, I get them out and use them and stop the headache in its tracks! My life has been changed by a few cold marble stones, some easy facial/neck strokes, and a woman who cared enough to find a way to relieve headache pain without medication. For that, I am immensely grateful and always in debt to Kelly Lott and her cold stone techniques!

I do use the cold stones in massage business…when I see clients list "headaches" on their intake sheet. I rub my hands together and say "I can use my stones today". I don’t have ice available where my massage room is, so I keep them in the refrigerator all the time, and incorporate them into my massage on the forehead, occipitals and behind the ears…they are surprised how relaxing they are (especially when I have told them in advance that I am using "cold stones" vs. hot stones which they are more used to).

I am enjoying the cold stones very much. I have a few regular clients right now and several have experienced significant improvement both in the severity and the frequency of their chronic headaches. They look forward to their session knowing that they will always enjoy the session itself and feel relieved of tension and pain when they leave. It is also a pleasant massage for me to give because I can relax and enjoy the quiet and peace just as much as the client. It will continue to be a significant part of my practice as I strive to give my clients what will benefit them the most. Thank you for sharing this technique with me Kelly!

Thank you again for a wonderful class. It’s already working! My last client last night came in on day three of a migraine. I asked her if she wanted to try the stones. She said "anything". Since I wasn’t set up yet and we were already in session I started by wrapping her feet and putting a cold cloth over her eyes while I set up. I didn’t have a bowl yet, heck I haven’t even shown them to our boss yet. Not having ice or a bowl I put the stones in between two ice packs. They had been in the freezer all day so that was a plus. This method seems to work pretty well. The stones are not as cold but they are not messy either. I had a bowl with a pack and water in it for the face cloth. She walked out migraine free! Wow.

Love the cold stone set, when I got home, my husband had a migraine and I used the DVD, the oils and massage techniques on him. It worked wonderful. I think the large stones probably put you in a "still" point-Craniosacral term which helps with headaches.
